First Catch

We'll have to break up our Australia pics because life just keeps happening and I can't quite keep up.

So Paul has been going to Ship Creek, which is right below downtown, a lot lately. It's called Ship Creek because that's where the port is. Everything that we have in this town comes through that port. Anchorage was, after all, developed because it was the easiest port of entry back in the days of the territory. Paul's been learning how to fish for kings. It's nice because he can ride his bike. Well, this week he invited me, figuring he might need a little of my good luck. So we hopped on our bikes and rode down to the port on Monday morning, bright and early. I feel like I'm about 12 years old when we ride our bikes with backpacks full of fishing poles. I also feel quite brave in some parts because one wrong move and you would end up in the rushing river. There is this group of about 15 men that are there EVERY DAY. They're super funny and make for some pretty interesting people watching.

ANYWAY, Monday I got one on my line that got away. I think it must have been about 100 pounds or so at least. But it definitely whet my appetite. So we went back on Tuesday morning before work. We got there at high tide, which is ideal. The tide was super high that day. So high infact that the same trails we had ridden our bikes on before were now covered in several feet of water. So we rode our bikes right through them. Again, feeling 12, quite courageous, and having so much fun at 6 am before work.

Paul is the best looking fisherman I have ever seen in my entire life.

The entire bank where we stand to fish from was covered in water. So we leaned our bikes up against each other and set up our poles and started fishing. I had to leave for work before I caught one, but Paul stayed behind wishin' and hopin'.

Well, I got a call at work about an hour later. There were train whistles in the background and Paul's jubilant voice saying, "Shug! I got one!" What a monster.

And then we ate it. Some of it. Because it's huge! We smoked some and barbecued some. Delicious.

Life is good.
